Out of nowhere my dad, casually tosses my way, "Oh y'all need to figure out what y'all doin with the land."
"What land?"
"That land out back behind the house!"
"All those woods back there?"
"Well, those woods used to be your granddad's tobacco crops."
"I'm sorry how much is back there?"
15 acres. When my grandparents passed away, about 20 years ago, they had split up their 124 acre farm among their 9 children. By that time, the land hadn't been worked since my granddad's health declined. Most of the Kelly Family, save my dad who still lives on the acre that he raised my sister and me on, and one uncle who tried, unsuccessfully, to open a metal shop on his portion, went to live their lives miles away.
And so it was just left to grow over wild and THICK. Those thorns are no JOKE, y'all, I'm telling you!
But, I have to say, standing on that earth, up under that blue sky that just won't stop. We heard its call. It's time to heal this family land.
Kelly Green Farms is taking the first steps in regenerating the land by establishing a Working Farm Stay Retreat. We have been compelled to navigate around 9-5 jobs and the 3 hour distance from our home in Charlotte to Louisburg, because the time to create this is right now.
It's trippy, the timing, between my dad giving us the news of this inheritance and COVID. We found ourselves just chugging that fresh natural air when we could and pining away for it when we had to go back home.
We realize that we cannot be the only ones seeking some good clean air, and a way less populated experience. We have felt the benefits of working outside, breaking a sweat, and being in close proximity to nature. We needed to share this.
So, here we are. We are Kelly Green Farms.
We are a manifestation in progress of becoming a working farm stay wellness retreat. Our mission is to apply the healing process of regenerative agriculture not only to our family land, but to the people that visit and the community that surrounds us.
Watch us grow!
